ADVANCED FIREFIGHTING TRAINING ONBOARD (AFF2)
We had the opportunity to conduct an Advanced Firefighting Training onboard an oil tanker, while the vessel was at anchorage. In cooperation with Officers and Crew we managed to accomplish the following learning objectives:
- To understand the importance of fire prevention measures and actions during ordinary safety inspections and routine checks onboard
- To become aware of the direct and indirect fire-risks in various compartments of the vessel
- To identify the appropriate method of extinction depending on the class of fire
- To maintain effective communication while exercising established emergency procedures under fire-fighting simulated conditions
- To understand the importance of adequate planning and teamwork while coping with a fire emergency
- To realize the implications of stress on adequate decision making
- To maintain control of the situation implementing the pre-defined steps
- To effectively direct the persons in key-positions for keeping the simulated emergency under control
- To appreciate the usefulness of the adequate rehearsal of established emergency procedures in identifying skills which need to be improved
- To effectively communicate lessons learned among all involved and concerned upon the completion of team-effort
