Human Performance & Safety

By empowering people with the right knowledge, skills, and competencies, we help organizations promote safety and efficiency.

Psychological Safety Survey

Psychological safety has become a critical factor in organisational performance, shaping how teams communicate, learn, and respond to challenges. At People as Solution, we offer a structured Psychological Safety Survey designed to help organisations understand the conditions their people experience in everyday work — both onboard and ashore.

Our approach is grounded in leading research, drawing on the work of Amy Edmondson (The Fearless Organization), Timothy R. Clark’s Four Stages of Psychological Safety, and validated elements of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ). By combining these frameworks, we create a practical assessment that measures how confidently individuals can speak up, ask questions, admit uncertainty, and contribute without fear of negative consequences.

The survey provides a data-driven view of team climate, highlighting areas of trust, communication strength, and behavioural risk. Results are translated into clear insights and actionable recommendations that support leadership decision-making, enhance human performance, and strengthen the organisation’s overall safety culture.

Safety Climate Survey

Safety Climate Survey

The Safety Climate Survey is specifically designed for the oil and gas industry with the goal to assess the attitudes of individual within an organization towards health and safety.
The toolkit contains questionnaires to identify safety climate onboard while it also aids the promotion of a positive safety culture in the offshore environment.
The questionnaire items are focused on the following segments:
• Confidence in the safety management
• Pressure for the various tasks onboard
• Supervision and management
• Rules and regulations
• Safety onboard

Gap Analysis (TMSA 3 & RISQ 3.2)

Our Management System System Gap Analysis service provides a structured and evidence-based evaluation of your Safety Management System against the latest TMSA 3 and RightShip RISQ 3.2 requirements, depending on vessel’s type. Using a methodology developed through years of DPA, audit and compliance experience, we examine the full alignment between documented procedures and actual operational practices both ashore and onboard. The assessment covers governance, risk management, vessel operations, cargo handling, machinery readiness, reporting culture and superintendent oversight, identifying strengths, systemic vulnerabilities and improvement priorities. The outcome is a clear, actionable roadmap that enables companies to close compliance gaps, elevate safety performance and enhance their readiness for vetting inspections and external audits.

Mental Health Wellbeing

Mental Health and Wellbeing Survey

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics:

  • Mental health conditions contributed to an increasing proportion of work-related injuries and illnesses in Australia in 2021-2022, accounting for 9% of all serious work-related claims — a rise of nearly 37% since 2017-2018.
  • 45% of employed adults say that anxiety or depression is hurting their productivity in the office.
  • Psychosocial hazards create a toxic workplace environment that erodes colleague relationships and provokes harmful behaviors.

The goal of our mental health and wellbeing survey is to understand and measure how employees feel about their own wellbeing. Data are collected strictly anonymously and findings can be used to modify policies and take appropriate action to promote wellness at work.

Safety Quality Performance Audits

Safety, Quality and Performance Audits

We conduct 2nd party audits on behalf of shipping companies, focusing on safety, quality, and overall performance, both onboard and ashore.
Each audit is designed to go beyond checklist compliance.
We evaluate real working practices, identify compliance and performance gaps, and provide practical insights that help teams promote efficiency.
Whether assessing SMS implementation, crew engagement, or safety-critical routines, our goal is to deliver actionable feedback that supports continuous improvement and reinforces your organizational standards.
Our approach combines deep field experience, human factors awareness, and a focus on measurable results; thus, the audit process becomes a tool for learning!

The digitalization of Safety

We support shipping companies in enhancing safety performance through the integration of digital tools and AI-powered applications.

Our services include the design and implementation of systems that collect, analyze, and visualize operational data, helping decision-makers identify risk patterns, human factor triggers, and process inefficiencies.

Our digitalization approach transforms safety from a static report into a live, learning system.

We work closely with each client to ensure that AI technologies support (and not replace) human insights, creating tools that are practical, explainable, and trusted by the people who use them.

By combining safety expertise, technical know-how, and operational awareness, we help companies take a confident step forward into the future of safety management.

SMS IMS Development

SMS / IMS Development

We help shipping companies develop and revise their Safety Management System (SMS) manuals to ensure clarity, usability, and compliance with ISM Code requirements and best industry practices.

Our focus is on creating manuals that are not only audit-ready, but also functional and practical for the people who use them.

We tailor each SMS to reflect the company’s actual operations, risk profile, and organizational culture, avoiding generic or overly complex documentation.

By aligning “work as imagined” with “work as done” we help improve crew understanding, reduce procedural friction, and support a more resilient safety culture.

Our process includes gap analysis, stakeholder input, and optional integration with digital tools or AI-supported systems.

The result is an SMS manual that strengthens both compliance and performance and becomes a trusted tool for safe, effective operations.

Human Factors INtegration

Human Factors Integration into SMS

From a Human Factors perspective, a SMS can be seen as a socio-technical system.

A socio-technical system is a system that involves both social (interactions between individuals and groups) and technical (physical artefacts such as hardware and software) components, and their interactions.
The effective integration of human factors into SMS is a critical process including the following steps:

  • Consideration of best practices (e.g. OCIMF HFMSA).
  • Gathering input from the project(s), with company-specific information on the interaction(s) among company personnel and on the “work as done”.
  • Discussion on the findings and actionable recommendations, to figure out the adequate way to integrate them into SMS.
  • Identification of relevant SMS chapters/sections that have to revised.
  • Incorporation of HF into SMS / revision of the SMS.
  • Review of revised SMS – feedback from the “end-user” of the system.
  • Finalization of documents
Employee engagement

Evaluating Employee Engagement

What is employee engagement?

Employee engagement is the strength of the mental and emotional connection employees feel toward the organization they work for, their team and their work. It’s the level of “emotional investment” employees have put in their work and the organization’s goals.

Why we should measure it?

Because employee engagement is critical to the success of your employees and organization as a whole. Engaged empoyees have higher wellbeing, better retention, lower absenteeism and higher productivity. According to research in the field by GALLUP, companies with more engaged employees are more resilient in turbulent and uncertain environments. With substantial changes in the way that work is conducted in the post-pandemic era, those in leadership positions have to deal with unprecedented challenges and employee engagement can be a valuable “tool” in their hands.

Our approach will enable us to identify issues that may have critical implications on the organizational performance and take action to mitigate the associated risks

Renote Navigational Assessment

Remote Navigational Assessments – VDR Analysis

Data stored in the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) can be used to conduct remote assessment of navigational practices. Using the VDR for remote navigation assessment can be really useful considering that:

  • The trading pattern of the vessel may limit the opportunity to conduct a traditional navigation assessment.
  • Following up is needed to verify the correction of non-conformances recorded during a physical navigation assessment.
  • Assessing the bridge team without being influenced by the presence of an assessor leads to valid observations regarding “work as done”.

Our team of maritime professionals has considerable experience in the development and implementation of navigational policies and procedures. Thus, they are in position to identify potential deviations between established procedures and navigation practices. At the same time, based on their seniority they have the ability to identify situations where bridge team management can be further promoted through the appropriate use of available resources onboard.
